John Mackay was 23 when he saved 20-year-old Edith Steiner from Auschwitz in 1944, neither of the two knew then that they were made for each other.
John himself had escaped from an Italian prison ‘war camp in Tobruk, Liby. He impersonated an Italian soldier and had been part of a Scottish commando unit that liberated Edith, known as Eci, with other from the nightmare of concentration camps.
John was 23 when he rescued Edith 20.
Edith- born in the Székesfehérvár region of Hungary, had lost family’s 39 members during the holocaust, and only she and her mother survived.
That first dance with Edith was the beginning of a love story that would last over 70 years.
Soon they were married on July 17, 1946 after returning to Scotland.
They have been together after 70 years.
