The fourth annual Big Picture Natural World Photography celebrated the different forms of life on Earth and at the same time taught the people how to protect and conserve this life. The competition was held by the California Academy of Sciences and the winners are listed below.
1. The Aquatic Life :
The nutrient and plankton rich waters of the Revillagigedo Archipelago, Mexico, create an unusually healthy ecosystem.
2. Confiscated:
These elephant feet footstools are among some 1.3 million confiscated wildlife products housed in a U.S. Fish and Wildlife repository.
3. Feather in the Flames:
Farmers in Singur, West Bengal, burn off the stubble left after harvest, and black drongos swoop to eat the insects, coming out of their holes.
4. Synchronized Sleepers:
Some divers were following these sperm whales in the Caribbean Sea, when they suddenly seemed to fall into a deep slumber.
5. Kamokuna Lava Firehose:
During the month of January lava started gushing out from an underground lava tube at the base of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano and fell into the Pacific Ocean. As it met the cool sea-water steam, sand and chunks of cooled lava were thrown into the air.
6. The Salmon Catchers:
To capture this view the photographer set up his camera-trap on a log where he knew the bears would come to hunt for salmon, in the Yukon River, Canada.
7. Ecosystem:
A termite mound in Emas National Park, Brazil, glows with the light produced by the larvae of the click beetles.
The More The Merrier:
Macaque monkeys huddle together at Shodoshima Island, Japan, pooling body heat as temperatures drop.
