Indian born cult leader of spiritual house known as “Dera Sacha Sauda”, Guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was born on Indian Independence Day, August 15, 1967.
The Guru had a multidimensional personality as he was a music producer, song-writer, actor and filmmaker. All his musical creations and films basically revolved around him. A very strongly self-conceited personality, he would hate any criticism or impersonation of any kind. So much so that a comedian was jailed for impersonating him and a journalist was murdered by his goons on suspicions of following on him.
The story of this self-styled messiah is very interesting though it’s a sad reflection on the sorry state of India as a country. The hapless Indian masses blindly follow such cult figures and treat them as demi gods. Most of disciples were from the ill-educated, ill informed, poor, extremists and downright stupid.
His Dera was famous for philanthropy, and found its name in the famous “Guinness Book of World Records” for their services to the humanity on account of causes such as “blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol screening. In affiliation with the American Society of Echocardiography the Dera organized the biggest echo testing arrangement, another Guinness record. In addition they organized world’s largest Oil Lamp display (150,009), largest finger painting, world’s biggest hand sanitizing campaign, all three are Guinness World Records.
All these efforts added with other charitable works combined to make him a larger than life character in India. He was particularly more popular in the lower caste Hindus and poor who constituted almost 70% of his total followers. His larger than life portrayal combined with his massive following he was requested by various political parties for his support in elections. To the extent that incumbent PM of India, Narendra Modi also sought his help and praised him for his services to the nation.
With such high profile, he was being tried and investigated for rape of two of his female followers, one of whom wrote a complaint letter to the Chief Minister of Haryana his home state, the Chief Justice of India. Indian court found him guilty of rape on two counts and sentenced him to 20 years rigorous imprisonment running concurrently.
The followers have raised all kind of hell in India and torching of various structures, violence has so far accounted for over 30 dead and more than 250 injured. The CM of Haryana State, ML Khattar showed his total ignorance to the violence afflicting his state the most. It is painful to note that this rape investigation was going on for 15 years, and during this period the Congress and BJP sought his political support. The CM of Haryana is so enlightened that on the issue of female empowerment and emancipation he is on record having said that why don’t these girls just roam on the streets naked.
