3 La Fiesta Mall on Saipan (Northern Mariana Islands)

A lasting emblem of Saipan’s flourishing and shatter, La Fiesta Mall was an open-air shopping center located in one of the northern villages of San Roque, Northern Mariana Islands. It opened in 1992 and had more than forty stores at its peak, including Rolex and Chanel. But after the Japanese economy stumbled in the late 1990s, Saipan has seen a dwindling in its tourism and the mall closed in 2004, it was considered one of its kind. The island’s broader economy has also struggled mightily, for a host of reasons, and there are many other abandoned buildings.
